After the Franco-Prussian War, France’s confidence as the supreme continental European power was shattered. Yet, out of this difficult time came the birth of a distinctly French modernism in music, art, poetry, and even architecture that has repeatedly re-invented itself in ways that are hard to define—they all have that most amazing French “Je ne sais quoi.” In this program, we’ll explore three “incarnations” of the French phrase meaning literally “I don’t know what,” but meaning much more than that, although none of us are quite sure what!
