Castelul Dracul
Program I: Friday, October 28, 2011 at 7:30 pm

Erno Dohnanyi: String Quartet No. 2, Op. 15

Bela Bartok: Romanian Folk Dances

John Deak: Lucy and the Count: Love Dreams from Transylvania

Zoltan Kodaly: String Quartet No. 2, Op. 10

Vittorio Monti: Csárdás

Vlad III --“The Impaler”-- was the historical Prince of Transylvania who became “reincarnated” as the horrific icon of Count Dracula by Bram Stoker. Many historical castles in Transylvania vie for the distinction of being “Castle Dracula,” which has sometimes been considered part of Romania, sometimes part of Hungary and always part of legend. Join us as we explore the “un-hallowed hall” of “Castle Dracula” from the varying perspectives of Hollywood, Hungary, and Romania!

Carpe Diem String Quartet: Chas Wetherbee and John Ewing, violins; Korine Fujiwara, viola; Kristin Ostling, cello; with Chris Burns, double bass

Marin Marais: Trio in B-flat Major
Jules Demersseman: Sixth Concert Solo, Op. 82

Francis Poulenc: Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano
Bill Douglas: Quartet for Flute, Oboe, Bassoon and Piano

One of the oldest and most venerable music conservatories in the world, the Conservatoire de Paris has shaped the music of Europe and America perhaps like no other institution on earth. It has produced a particularly rich heritage of works for wind instruments which members of the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra’s wind section present for our enjoyment.

Artists: Mary Jensen, flute; Selena Greso, oboe; John Ruze, bassoon; Oksana Ezhokina, piano

The Great Hall of Annie Wright School

Charles Ives: Sonata for Violin and Piano, No. 4
Leonard Bernstein: Piano Trio, Op. 2
Irving Fine: Music for Piano
Horatio Parker: Suite for Piano Trio

The great music traditions of both Harvard and Yale are both so often overshadowed by their penchant for producing billionaire technology gurus, Nobel Prize laureates and Presidents of the United States. We offer this fresh perspective of America’s oldest and most venerable “hallowed halls” in academe as well as music and art.

Puget Sound Piano Trio: Maria Sampen, violin; David Requiro, cello; Duane Hulbert, piano

Puget Sound Piano Trio

Hollywood
Program IV:  Friday, May 11, 2012 at 7:30 pm
The Great Hall of Annie Wright School

Miklós Rózsa: Adagio
Miklós Rózsa: String Trio
Erich Wolfgang Korngold: Piano Trio

More than any other city in the world, Los Angeles became the destination of choice for musicians and literary figures fleeing Hitler’s Third Reich. One prominent composer living in Hollywood, Arnold Schoenberg, spoke of being “driven into paradise” by the Nazi dictator. Central Europe’s loss was America’s gain, and composers such as Miklós Rózsa and Erich Wolfgang Korngold brought American audiences some of the most sumptuous music ever conceived for the silver screen. Join us as we explore the beautiful concert music of these great masters!

Artists: Svend Rřnning, violin; John Scanlon, viola; Richard Treat, cello;
Cameron Bennett, piano
